Arts Insight
Attendance, participation and engagement with the arts
Why does someone choose to attend – or not attend – arts events? What are the drivers and obstacles to taking part? What do people genuinely value about participation?
Examining attendance, participation, behaviours and attitudes from the perspective of the public is a valuable source of information for us and for venues and arts organisations around the country.
Since 2018, we have commissioned Ireland’s leading market research company Ipsos B&A (formerly Behaviour & Attitudes) to run an annual national arts engagement survey.

The purpose of Arts Insight is to analyse how the public engage with the arts and culture in Ireland, and how these correspond with other consumer and lifestyle behaviours. The poll is conducted through face-to-face interviews with a nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults ages 16+.
We use this research to:
- Inform evidence-based policy on public engagement.
- Shape and inform performance indicators on participation, attendance and attitudes.
- Ensure we are as effective as possible as the national arts development agency.
- Provide information to support the arts sector to grow and diversify audiences.
- Tell the story of public investment in the arts.
- Create a bank of knowledge about the arts in Ireland.
