Laureate for Irish Fiction

Author Colm Tóibín, loved by readers and critics alike for his intellect, compassion and wit, is the Laureate for Irish Fiction 2022-2024.

His public Laureateship programme centres around forging reading communities in library book clubs and working with fellow writers to enhance and promote Irish literature at home and internationally.

Laureate for Irish Fiction 2022-2024

Colm Tóibín was appointed Laureate for Irish Fiction in January 2022 following an extensive selection process chaired by Professor Kevin Rafter, former Chair of the Arts Council.

Colm first received an Arts Council bursary in 1987 to support his early writing, and the success of his career since has been a source of great pride to us.

What is the Laureate for Irish Fiction?

The Laureateship honours an established Irish writer of fiction and celebrates the contribution of fiction writers to Irish artistic and cultural life.

Colm Tóibín is the third Laureate, following Sebastian Barry (2018-2021) and the inaugural Laureate, Anne Enright (2015-2018).
